It might seem like this sea otter is doing tricks, but these are actually important husbandry behaviors. What I'm actually doing in this video is training a sea otter named Clara to target on my hand while I inspect her eyes and ears to make sure they are healthy. However, Clara has beautiful teeth and she is clearly proud of her pearly white teeth.
Sea otters have impressive molars that are significantly more robust than human teeth. Otters will use their molars to crack into the shells of things like crabs, mussels, and abalone. While this might sound painful to us, it is actually very important for sea otters. The shells of these animals act like a tooth brush and scrape away the plaque from a sea otter's teeth.
Clara is a rescued and rehabilitated sea otter who was deemed non-releasable by the NOAA and Department of Wildlife after a series of unsafe interactions with humans and pets. Just like Clara, every sea otter I've worked with has been rescued and rehabilitated by a marine wildlife rescue center. That's why I've decided to host a charity livestream to help build a new rescue center on the Oregon Coast. Learn more here: https://youtu.be/-n6iPlv8a7A
