Here are the observations and updates on the new Bottle Aquarium in the past 2 weeks. If you are planning to build one for yourself, here’s what you may expect!

As any aquascape go through the natural nitrogen cycling process, certain changes are bound to happen. Protein sludge will appear on the surface which indicates its time for a partial water change. It will be fun and exciting to see as more microscopic life-form develops to support the establishing ecosystem.

The snail reproduced quickly since algae development and decaying plant matter becomes more available, providing the snail a surplus of food source for them. This is how nature tries to keep its balance—when there’s abundant food source, the predator multiplies to keep the food source in check.

I didn’t bother test the water at this point because in the first two weeks (at least), the ammonia and nitrate level will still be very high for this water volume. It will take a few more weeks before the shrimp colony can be safely added.

Plants like the Ludwigia repens grow out of the water surface to take advantage of the Co2 in the open air.
