Pearling is a common occurrence in many aquatic plants in the aquarium when they produce oxygen during photosynthesis and release it through their tissues at a faster rate.

Before I thought pearling can only be achieved when you inject CO2 in the aquarium but having observed many nanoscapes we’ve created, I realized it can be achieved by having 4 key elements:

1. Bright enough lighting - light intensity should be high enough to prompt the plants go though the process of photosynthesis. You would know you light is not bright enough if it hardly illuminates the bottom of the tank or vessel.

2. Nutrient-rich soil - Plants need the nutrients as they synthesize food by using light and available CO2 in the water.

3. Shallow vessel - Light energy reaches the plants faster and efficiently when the tank is shallow. The deeper the vessel/ tank, the lesser light comes through to reach the scape floor.

4. Right plant selection - there are types of aquatic plant species that pearl more compared to others. Fast growing stem plants and carpet plants pearl more than slow growing ones like Anubias and and Bucephalandra species.
