Fur seals are highly adapted to life both on land and in the water. Sleeping on land is pretty straight forward. Like most pinnipeds, these sea doggos will often find rocky outcrops, called rookeries, where they will sleep in large groups. However, fur seals will often spend days out to sea foraging for food. So how do they sleep in the water?

There are several real obstacles to getting a good night’s rest while floating in the water. First, fur seals are mammals and need to breathe air. Second, the flippers of a fur seal are not insulated by fur yet are highly vascularized. This means they lose a lot of heat through their flippers. So, fur seals will sleep floating on their back with at least three flippers above the water, reducing heat loss in the cold water. It’s a position known as a “jug handle” or “jugging.”

Jugging greatly reduces heat loss, but what about a fur seal’s need to breathe air? Well, that’s the most interesting part! Like most marine mammals, fur seals are able to sleep one hemisphere of their brain at a time. It’s called unihemispheric slow wave sleep. While one half of the seal’s brain sleeps, the other is awake to handle functions such as breathing. It’s also why you can see the fur seal using one flipper to steer around in the water!

Even though they look cute, fur seals can be dangerous. As we see in my video here → https://youtu.be/BU-hcLlRo4U
