A sleeping sea otter dreams with her tongue hanging out of her mouth. While sea otters spend the vast majority of their time in the ocean, including when they are asleep, they do occasionally haul out on land. Typically, sea otters do this to conserve body heat.
The ocean is cold, much colder than the necessary body temperature of a mammal. And heat loss is 27 times faster in water than in air. Sea otters are the smallest marine mammal and the only one without a layer of blubber. While sea otters have the densest fur coat in the animal kingdom, it isn’t always enough to keep them warm. The sea otter sleeping in this video is Clara. She was rescued and deemed non-releasable by the NOAA and the US Department of Fish and Wildlife due to a history of unsafe interactions with people and pets.
