Different types of reptiles from different microclimates require different levels of UVB. There is no one-size-fits-all solution. However, most reptiles fit into one of four categories, known as the Ferguson Zones:

Zone 1 describes crepuscular reptiles and shade-dwellers.

Zone 2 describes partial sun and occasional baskers.

Zone 3 describes open and partial sun baskers.

Zone 4 describes mid-day open sun baskers.

Each of these zones is defined by a certain range of UV Index measurements. Although you can check Dr. Frances Baines' UV Tool (linked in the comments) to figure out what range of UVI your reptile needs, I’ve found that it’s much easier to simply use the online Arcadia Interactive UV Index Lighting Guide!

Although UVI can be estimated when you know the exact UVB bulb, fixture, mesh obstruction, and distance from the source, there are simply too many variables to know for sure how much your reptile is getting from a particular lamp. That’s why it’s best practice to measure the gradient of UVB in your reptile enclosure with a Solarmeter 6.5. If you are serious about reptile keeping, it’s a good idea to invest in one of these devices to fine-tune your husbandry.
