Videos of sea otters tapping their paws have always been popular on my channel. However, most of the marine mammals I've worked with, including most of the sea otters, have only been able to tap one of their paws. Clara, on the other hand, is an ambidextrous sea otter who can vigorously taps both of her paws!
I am a marine biologist who has worked with rescued sea otters for over a decade. Each and every sea otter that I've worked with was a rescued and rehabilitated animal that was deemed non-releasable by federal wildlife agencies. Some of these otters were rescued after being tragically separated from their mothers while they were still dependent pups. Others were rescued after unsafe interactions with humans, similar to sea otter 841 - the sea otter stealing surfboards in Santa Cruz. See my reaction to that story, and what I think authorities should do about that sea otter, here: https://youtu.be/zWrudu42Q9M
The sea otter in this video is named Clara. Similar to otter 841, Clara lost her fear of people after being approached several times by humans and their pets. Because of this, Clara was deemed a risk to public safety and herself. She was rescued by wildlife professionals at Monterey Bay Aquarium and deemed non-releasable after being assessed by the NOAA and the Department of Wildlife. She has gone on to live a full and happy life under human care where she is now an ambassador for her species.
