Sea Otter Taps Ice to Break Into a Treat #shorts

In the wild, sea otters will often use rocks to crack into the hard shells of clams, mussels, and abalone. However, it’s difficult to give live oysters and clams to marine mammals under human care. The seafood has to be carefully inspected for quality and freshness. In fact, the food these sea otters eat is required to meet FDA standards for high end restaurants!

But the instinct to use tools to break into a shell doesn’t go away just because these sea otters are living under human care. That’s one of the reasons we give them ice treats. They’ll often use one ice cube to chip another cube into smaller bites. It also doesn’t hurt that sea otters LOVE ice.

Hardy is an adult male sea otter who was rescued in 2017 when he was just a pup and tragically became separated from his mom. Sea otters spend the first 6-8 months of their lives with their moms, learning how to survive in the unforgiving North Pacific Ocean. Without these skills, they cannot survive in the wild. That is why Hardy was deemed non-releasable by the Department of Fisheries and Oceans Canada after being orphaned, rescued, and taken to Port Hardy for treatment.
