???????????? Happy Valentine’s Day! Love is in the air at the Small Mammal House, where southern two-toed sloth Athena sneaks a smooch from her mate, Vlad. Keepers say the pair does this “kiss” behavior frequently, and Athena usually makes the first move. Keepers think the act may be less of a romantic gesture and more of a greeting. Mother and baby sloths often kiss, and scientists suspect they do so to share gut bacteria, or so the baby can learn which foods to eat. Athena and Vlad have a recommendation to breed from the Association of Zoos and Aquarium’s Species Survival Plan. We’re keeping two toes crossed for a baby in their future!
