A dolphin is a type of aquatic mammal that belongs to the order Cetacea. Delphinidae (oceanic dolphins), Platanistidae (Indian river dolphins), Iniidae (New World river dolphins), Pontoporiidae (brackish dolphins), and Lipotidae (extinct) are the families of dolphins (baiji or Chinese river dolphin). There are 40 species of dolphins that exist today.
The Maui's dolphin is 1.7 meters (5 feet 7 inches) long and weighs 50 kilograms (110 pounds), whereas the orca is 9.5 meters (31 feet 2 inches) long and weighs 10 tonnes (11 short tons). Several dolphin species have sexual dimorphism, which means that males are larger than females. They have streamlined bodies and flippers on two of their limbs. Though not as adaptable as seals, some dolphins can reach speeds of up to 29 kilometers (18 miles) per hour and leap up to 30 feet (9.1 m). Dolphins catch fast-moving prey with their conical teeth. They have excellent hearing that is adaptable to both air and water. It has advanced to the point that some people can survive even if they are blind. Some species have evolved to be good The majority of species favor tropical environments, although others, such as the right whale dolphin, prefer colder conditions. Dolphins eat mostly fish and squid, but a few, such as the orca, eat big mammals like seals. Male dolphins mate with several females on a yearly basis, however female dolphins only mate every two to three years. Calves are normally born in the spring and summer, and the females are solely responsible for their upbringing. Some species' mothers fast and breastfeed their young for an extended period of time. Dolphins make a range of vocalizations, the most common of which are clicks and whistles.

The name comes from the Greek (delphs), which means "dolphin," and is linked to the Greek (delphus), which means "womb." As a result, the animal's name can be translated as "a 'fish' with a womb." The name was passed down down the generations via the Latin delphinus[4] (the romanization of the later Greek o – delphinos[2]), which became dolfinus in Medieval Latin and daulphin in Old French, reintroducing the ph into the word "Dolphin." The term mereswine (which means "sea pig") has also been used in the past.
