Best way to grow Anubias and Cryptocoryne | Experiment

In this video we run an experiment to determine the best way to grow anubias and cryptocoryne in an emersed aquarium plant setup. This experiment has been designed to measure the effects of lighting and substrate on the emersed plant growth.

For lighting we have high light racks which are running LED plant grow lights and the low light racks are running standard LED shop lights. For substrate, we are using three different types which includes gravel, montmorillonite (Safe T Sorb) Clay and Rockwool.

The emersed setup is an ebb and flow system, meaning that the water level rises and falls through the action of bell siphons continuously. This is a hydroponic growing method which bathes the plants in a nutrient solution. There is a recirculating pump in the sump that is connected to a timer and runs on a cycle of 2 mins on, followed by 20 mins off.

Anubias nana and cryptocoryne wendtii are the two species of aquarium plants used in this experiment. These plants were selected as they represent two distinct types of growing styles that are common for aquarium plants. Anubias acts more like an epiphyte plant and primarily feeds through the water column and uses their roots to attached to various hardscapes in aquariums. Whereas, cryptocoryne is a heavy root-feeder which derives the bulk of their nutrients from the substrates in our aquariums.

This video is part one of the experiment and in the next video we will harvest the plants and break down the result and see what combination of lighting and substrate grew these aquarium plants the best.
