Vaquita: world's rarest marine mammal close to extinction
In a study recently published in the journal Royal Society Open Science, scientists reported that there is only about 30 vaquita left in the world. The vaquita is a small porpoise found only in the Gulf of California, and it is considered to be the world's rarest marine mammal. The main threat to the vaquita is accidental entanglement in gillnets set by fishermen targeting other fish. If something isn't done soon to save this species from extinction, it will be lost forever.
