But I want plants and discus! But you can't have a substrate for discus. But I want plants. I've tried bare tanks, didn't like it, I've tried lots of plants with deep substrates, seemed to have issues. Here's the halfway compromise. Not sure I like the look, but it has many discus benefits. You can have plants, you can use a special substrate, your plants will grow, your fish will feel more at home and they're easy to vacuum and clean around.

This Red Lotus floated around in this tank with 4 pathetic leaves for almost a year. I put him in his pot with some fancy plant substrate and here we are. Our first lily pad is reaching for the sky.
