The aquarium sand vs gravel debate has plagued the aquarium hobby for decades. The main difference between using aquarium gravel versus San is that gravel allows waste to get in between it and it hides in a little bit more. Wow aquarium sand doesn’t allow Waze to get in between the granular’s but it more or less sits on top of it. When using sand the filters in your aquarium move the waste into the water in allow your filter to remove it better than gravel.

All of the aquarium substrates are fairly similar and have small differences. If you’re thinking of using aquarium plants though that’s a whole other realm to talk about. Aquarium plants need nutrients in the substrate and sand or gravel doesn’t have that.

I commonly get asked what’s my personal opinion on what I would use on sand versus gravel. Are used to be under the opinion that gravel was better but now I have come to the other side and appreciate sand more in my fish tanks. It just looks better and not as much waste gets capped or caught in the substrate.
