The circle of life is a never-ending rhythm of birth, death, and rebirth. And for mammals in the wild, the act of hunting and consuming prey is a necessary part of that cycle. But while most predators kill their prey quickly, some predators have been observed to eat their prey alive. Prepare to be both fascinated and horrified as we witness nature at its most primal. What drives these animals to such brutal acts of predation? Why do African wild dogs fail to kill their targets before eating? Your questions will be answered as we show 15 Most Vicious Moments of Mammals Eating Their Prey Alive.

Number 15: Hyena
Although hyenas are mostly scavengers, they are also among the top predators in the savannah, capable of hunting together as a clan or on their lonesome.
A hyena rips apart an impala from the rear without a care that the prey is alive. The Impala tries to escape, but it gets pulled down again. The predator is relentless, and it eats on while the prey suffers from the pain. By going for the rump, the hyena avoids getting impaled by the victim’s horns.
Hyenas are known to be opportunistic predators that do not miss a chance to go after an easy kill.
Two hyenas ravage a poor zebra colt. The zebra has no means of escaping the two predators that are hell-bent on tearing its rump apart. It is a hopeless situation for the unfortunate animal as there is no help in sight to fend off the hungry predators. The prey is doomed to face a slow, agonizing death.
Hyenas have powerful jaws and teeth that can crush bones with ease, allowing them to access the nutrient-rich marrow inside.
In the plains of the savannah, a buffalo calf suffers at the jaws of persistent predators. The hyenas have already torn the muscles of the calf’s rear quarters, so getting up is not an option for the victim. They gnaw at the poor animal viciously, filling their bellies while the calf screams its lungs out.

Number 14: Orca
Orcas are apex predators that hunt a variety of aquatic prey. They are ruthless hunters that have been observed to sometimes play with their food before killing it.
A pod of killer whales launch a coordinated attack to kill an isolated elephant seal. With bite after bite, the predators stain the sea with the blood of their target. Although the attacks are vicious, it would take a few more strikes before the orcas finally end the life of their target.
Orcas are highly successful predators found in every ocean in the world. They hunt with sharp teeth that can be four inches long.
In the deep blue sea, a pod of killer whales attacks a gray whale and her calf. The predators are after the smaller whale, and after multiple assaults, they are able to isolate their target. The killer whales ram into the calf with sharp teeth, biting the poor animal with each attack.
Orcas are large and strong predators that can reach incredible speeds underwater. They can swim as fast as 30 knots or 34 miles per hour.
Like a torpedo, a killer whale swims up to land and grabs a seal. The whale places a strong bite on the smaller mammal, ensuring that its target is going nowhere other than its belly. The seal made the mistake of thinking it was safe from aquatic predators once it reached land.

Number 13: Polar Bear
Polar bears and marine mammals have a thick layer of fat that keeps their body warm in the extreme weather conditions of the Arctic.
Despite the amount of pain sustained, and blood lost, a harp seal clings to life as it gets consumed alive by a ravenous polar bear. The predator pays no mind to the writhing prey, and all it cares about is filling its belly. After some minutes, the poor harp seal finally gives up and welcomes death.
Polar bears are excellent swimmers, and they often take to the ocean in search of a meal.
A polar bear is on the hunt to catch a beluga whale. While it stands to reason that the whale should be more agile underwater, the bear still gets the whale. The predator eats it right there while another bear focuses on a vegetarian diet, stuffing its face with kelp.
