Let’s replace the Indian almond leaves for my Low-tech, no filter Simple Walstad Aquarium ????????????
~
Catappa or ketapang leaves, commonly known as Indian almond leaves, are highly beneficial for shrimp. They release tannins and organic compounds with antibacterial and antifungal properties that help ward off diseases. These leaves create an environment that closely resembles the shrimp’s natural habitat, reducing stress. As they break down, they provide food and encourage the growth of beneficial biofilm, which improves shrimp health and breeding conditions. Additionally, the leaves serve as hiding spots, further reducing stress for the shrimp.
~
To prepare these leaves, I steep them in hot water for about 2 to 3 hours until they cool completely before adding them to my aquarium. The hot water softens the leaves, making them more pliable and helping them sink faster. It also eliminates any potential pests, parasites, or harmful bacteria on the leaves.
