The little-known species of vaquitas are very close to extinction.
Of the 600 mammals of the species that were estimated to be alive in 1997, only 10 of these animals are still alive today in the Gulf of California, Mexico.
The Mexican coast is the only place where one of these endangered animals can still be seen.
The reason for their disappearance is almost entirely attributed to illegal fishing, a problem which is gradually destroying the world's biodiversity and is a politically complex issue.

The Mexican government issued an order banning gillnets in a large part of the Gulf of California itself in an attempt to reduce illegal fishing, but this regulation has done little to aid the situation with many not complying.
Many fishermen go out to sea daily with illegal fishing methods and nets, which causes vaquitas and similar species to become extinct.
