Sea corals, also known as coral polyps, are tiny invertebrate animals that belong to the class Anthozoa within the phylum Cnidaria. They are primarily found in marine environments, particularly in warm, shallow waters with plenty of sunlight. Corals are known for their calcium carbonate skeletons, which they secrete to form intricate structures called coral reefs. These reefs provide essential habitats for a diverse array of marine life, supporting approximately 25% of all marine species despite covering less than 1% of the ocean floor. Corals have a symbiotic relationship with photosynthetic algae called zooxanthellae, which live within their tissues and provide them with energy through photosynthesis. In return, corals offer the algae shelter and nutrients. However, corals are sensitive to changes in environmental conditions, including temperature, pollution, and ocean acidification, which can lead to coral bleaching and death. Human activities, such as overfishing, coastal development, and climate change, pose significant threats to coral reefs worldwide, highlighting the urgent need for conservation efforts to protect these valuable ecosystems.
