The hungry, hungry hippo we’ve all come to know and love may not be as gentle as we thought! This large, mostly herbivorous mammal is protective of its young and its territory. Mess with a hippo and you will suffer some serious consequences. But can a hippo take on a crocodile? Can they fight off their own kind for protection? Stay tuned to find out, because we will be looking at shocking moments when hippos attacked their enemies!

Hippos are large, semiaquatic mammals. This means that they breathe air like us, but spend a large amount of time in the water. Hippos are excellent swimmers and can hold their breath for up to 5 minutes at a time. While this is impressive, they don’t often have to hold their breath, as they are large enough to walk or stand in the waters that they wade in. In the shallow waters, they can easily lie down. As you can see in this clip, hippos aren’t the only ones lurking in the water. The mighty crocodile is often times seen as the king in these parts. And here, these crocodiles are enjoying a large meal consisting of an entire dead hippo! A nearby hippo finds this tragedy to be insulting and decides to take matters into its own hands. The hippo swims over to the crocodiles and fights them! This is a dangerous fight, as you can already see the crocodiles have a taste for hippo meat, but the hippo persists in order to avenge its dead companion. While the hippo doesn’t win this battle, it was the fight that showed off just how brave these large mammals can be!

You may find the word “large” to be a common descriptor of the hippo. And that is the perfect word because an adult hippo can weigh up to 1,800 kilograms, or about 3,968 pounds! That’s impressive given that their height comes in at only a maximum of about 5 feet and 3 inches. Their large, wide bodies help them to remain intimidating, even though they aren’t an apex predator and mostly eat plants. Check out this clip and you can see just how feared these hippos can be! This hippo’s calf floats on the surface of the water, and instantly we find out that it is dead. This pack of hyenas takes the opportunity to indulge in this meaty snack, but the mother hippo is waiting nearby. She sees what is happening and aggressively swims towards the hyenas. She stays quiet, but the way she charges at them shows these hyenas who’s boss! They notice her and quickly swim back to the safety of the grass. They watch her, but remain on guard and ready to flee in case she decides to attack. This momma hippo will do anything to protect her child’s body, even if it means fending off a pack of vicious hyenas!

Hippos are sometimes seen as peaceful and can live harmoniously with the animals around them, but this is not always the case when they are in the water. In the water, the hippo is a completely different animal. They become extremely territorial in these parts and may resort to violence if they feel that their territory is trespassed upon. When it comes to a pod of hippos, a mother may sometimes have to protect her newborn calf, even if that means engaging in some hippo on hippo violence. In this clip, when this mother hippo attempts to introduce her calf to her own pod, the other hippos become aggressive. The mother hippo finds this environment to be far too dangerous for her calf and decides to fight the more aggressive hippos. First, she gets her calf out of the way and towards safety, then she opens her jaw wide and shows just how big and bad she can get! After a bit of a tussle, the other hippos get the message and the mother hippo and her calf relax in a more calm environment. Once the calf has grown up, it will safely be able to swim and live with the other hippos, but until then, these hippos will continue to fight over territory, which really is the hippo way.

So we’ve seen just how far a mother hippo would go to protect her calf, but the adult hippos aren’t the only ones doing all the work! Sometimes, a baby hippo can become just as protective. Hippos have an innate sense of protection. Mother hippos will already be violently protective of their young, even before they are born!...
