Kordofan Giraffe (Kordofan Giraf)

The Kordofan giraffe is a subspecies
of giraffe found in northern Cameroon,
southern Chad, Central African Republic
and possibly western Sudan. In the Democratic Republic of the Congo, these peaceful mammals are killed for their tails, which are considered a status symbol in some communities. For example, to ask for a bride's hand, men should use the tail as a dowry for the bride's father. In addition, the long black hairs of the tail are used to make talismans, whips and cords.

De Kordofan-giraf is een ondersoort
van giraffe gevonden in het noorden van Kameroen,
zuidelijk Tsjaad, Centraal-Afrikaanse Republiek
en mogelijk West-Soedan. In de Democratische Republiek Congo worden deze vreedzame zoogdieren gedood voor hun staart, die in sommige gemeenschappen als een statussymbool wordt beschouwd. Om bijvoorbeeld om de hand van een bruid te vragen, moeten mannen de staart gebruiken als bruidsschat voor de vader van de bruid. Daarnaast worden de lange zwarte haren van de staart gebruikt om talismannen, zwepen en koorden te maken.
