Today, Lunchbox, my Argentinian horned frog (Ceratophrys ornata), received a frozen-thawed frog leg as her meal. This girl doesn’t give you any signal she’s hungry until she’s lunging at her prey (or you) ????! It’s important to offer these amphibians a varied diet. Horned frogs are masters of ambush hunting. These animals will dig down into the substrate, sometimes with just their eyes popping out, waiting patiently for unsuspecting prey to scurry on, at this point, they lunge forward and attack. Horned frogs are known for catching and eating everything from other amphibians, invertebrates, small reptiles, birds, and mammals! In fact, their jaws possess bony teeth-like points that essentially “pop” frogs. When frogs feel threatened they inflate. These “teeth” deflate them. One member of the genus Ceratophrys, Ceratophrys cornuta, is recognized as being particularly fond of eating frogs.
