Unlike most aquarium shrimp that actively graze on algae, biofilm, or scavenge leftover food and detritus, Bamboo and Vampire Shrimp feed in a completely different way. These unique shrimp use specialized fan-like appendages to capture microscopic particles suspended in the water column—such as microfauna, powdered foods, and other edible organic matter.
If the water lacks sufficient suspended particles, or if there isn’t enough current to keep food circulating, these shrimp can struggle to find enough nutrition—and may even starve. They do not typically rummage through the substrate or scrape algae off surfaces like Amano or Neocaridina Shrimp.
If you observe them repeatedly picking through the substrate, it's often a sign their dietary needs are not being met. They're not built for bottom-feeding, and their delicate fans can become damaged if they’re forced to constantly sift through debris.
To keep them healthy, ensure there’s good water movement so food stays suspended, supplement with finely powdered foods like ground up fish flakes which can be delivered upstream in the current, and avoid over-filtration—particularly media like filter floss that strips out all the fine particles they depend on.
Now, if you take a look at my tank, you’ll notice that my shrimp have positioned themselves directly in front of my wavemaker. This wavemaker keeps these fine particles suspended in the water column, making it much easier for them to feed efficiently. Instead of wandering the tank in search of food, they can sit comfortably with their fans open—catching food as it flows right to them. It’s an easy, effective way to mimic their natural feeding conditions and ensure they’re getting the nutrition they need without stress.
