Raw footage of the coral community at 5 sites at Magnetic Island on March 8th 2022.
Sea temperatures have crossed the 32°C bleaching threshold and we are in a neap tide phase with very little water movement, so potential bleaching stress levels are high.
We did see some bleached corals, but most of the assemblage was still looking healthy, however there was a noticeable paling of the Acropora and Montipora corals compared to our most recent survey last week, and we are expecting to observe some bleaching in the next few days.
Of some concern is the first signs of the disease "atromentous necrosis" affecting some of the Montipora colonies, which has indeed been seen before at Magnetic Island during summer heat stress events.
