Sea temperatures crossed the 32°C bleaching threshold between the 5th and 11th of March before a strong south-easterly wind change brought cooler conditions, cloud cover and re-mixed the water mass. Water temperatures have since fallen and were 28.4°C during today's survey.

Moderate bleaching is evident in the coral community, with about 60% of the corals showing signs of heat stress from the recent heatwave conditions, and the remainder looking normal. However an outbreak of atremous necrosis disease linked to extra warm sea temperatures is affecting one or two species of the common foliacious Montipora corals, and we are seeing quite extensive areas of mortality in some large colonies.
Water temperatures have returned to a cooler range (28.4C) and we remain hopeful that most of the bleached corals will recover over the next 6-8 weeks. The extent of the disease outbreak remains to be seen.

Stay tuned for updates.
