We were super impressed by the quality and diversity of the coral community we surveyed today in the marine reserve at Gowrie Cove, Yunbenun, Magnetic Island, on the Great Barrier Reef.
19° 6.897'S 146° 52.890'E
This was our first visit to the fringing reef here for quite a few years, and we saw some spectacular large table Acroporid corals and large areas of hard coral cover, indicating successful recovery from the damage caused by Tropical Cyclone Yasi in 2011. A large porites colony was partially bleached, and a few of the branching corals were pale, but otherwise the assemblage seems to be coping with the warmer than average sea temperatures we are experiencing this summer.
Our team collected 265 geotagged survey images using the TG6 cameras supplied by @Olympus_au and these short video clips give you some idea of how the reef was looking at this time.
